If your child’s calendar is more complicated than your own, it may be time to re-evaluate. Remember, it is all about finding a balance.

1. Do they enjoy the activity?

When children like something, their interest is very noticeable. They will gain confidence. Are they in all of these activities for the right reasons? If they like it, their passion will shine through. Let them take some accountability and be involved this process, even at a young age.

2.Are they good at the activity?

Every child is different. If they express no interest in the activity, they are unlikely to excel in it. Find something they enjoy, but also are good at. It can be discouraging for a child to be forced to do an activity that they are not great at. Children may begin to resent these types of activities and not like trying new things.

3. Are they getting enough “free” time?

In the end, kids should be allowed to be kids. A lot of development comes from free time and play. Creativity and imagination is essential for growth and the discovery of new passions. Some structure is important, but let them have free time to come to their own discoveries.

4. Are they burning out already?

Is their calendar so full that they are exhausted all the time, running from activity to activity? Children need to have adequate rest and time between activities to digest what they are doing.

5. Let them make their own choices

Giving children ownership and responsibility to make choices from a young age is empowering to children. Obviously, this is within set boundaries but giving a child options rather than telling them what to do can build trust and maturity.

As parents, you owe it to your children to let them make their own decisions.
